FAQ
Welcome! Instead of having an 'About' page, what would have been on it is in the answer to the first question in this faq.
If I get a question asked repeatedly then I will add it to the list.
1) What is this site about?
2) How did you come up with the idea?
3) What about the contest?
4) What about the prize?
5) So how much do you stand to make?
6) Where did you get all these pics?
7) Did you create this page yourself?
8) And you are?
9) Why is there a border of numbers around the edge?
10) Why are the pics black and white?
11) How long will the site be up?
12) What if my question isn't answered in this faq?
13) Do you really think that this will work?
14) Why doesn't anything happen when I click on a black and white picture?
15) Will the images change?
16) Can purple monkeys really fly?
1) What is this site about?
A fair question, which has the most simple of answers. I wanted to create a page that would
showcase all the world, it it's entirety on one page. While the idea seems simple the application
of it is not since there are so many aspects to the world: the people, the cultures, the music, the art,
the literature, the plants and wildlife, the technology, the scenery, I could go on and on...and on.
So, I figured that the best way to showcase about what our world was all about was visually, through pictures and
that's why there are literally thousands of pictures on my site (each 20 X 20 pixels in size), to try and show that variety.
But with so much variety in the world it's difficult to show every picture in detail,
that is why I added the pop-ups for each picture which are 60 X 60 pixels.
The pictures on my page show numerous aspects of the world: people, culture, sport, art, celebrations, sports, scenery, nature,
animals, objects, games, landmarks, cities etc., etc. Have a look and you'll see that no two pictures are the same. Even now I find myself
looking from pic to pic, there’s almost something addictive to it. I guess we just find miniaturized things cool.
Now we come to the commerce part of the site, somewhere somehow in almost every site out there on the net there is a monetary
component, it's just the way it is, site fees have to be paid etc, not to mention the creator of a site :). I'm not shy in saying that
I hope this sell attracts a lot of visitors, that people are entertained by it (I know from experience this will be a boredom killer in many an
office cube), have fun with it and in the process is profitable.
Each picture can be purchased on this site after which the smaller square
will be featured in color along with the pop up.
The price
for one square of space is a one time fee of $100 USD, which is really a bargain when considering you will the be represented on a page that
itself represents the world. You can purchase as many squares as you want
and have a larger picture displayed on the main page with a correspondingly larger pop-up (the details of which are on the
buying space page).
After purchasing what I do is then attach a link of your choice to the colored picture, along with
adding text to the pictures and/or tooltip text. If you want to purchase space but can't find a picture that you like on the site then simply send me
a picture that you would like displayed on the site and I can re-image it for size, and add text/tooltip. All that I ask is that
the picture be a real picture of some kind and not just pure text.
So, this page will not only represent the world we live in, it truly is "the whole world on a single page" and
will also become the first evolving internet collage of ourselves, our times,
our world and our lives.
Have a look at the pictures, try to crack the code yourself, tell your friends. I want this to be a fun, exciting and memorable experience for
all concerned.
2) How did you come up with the idea?
A while ago I visited a site that had a bunch of tiny pictures in a small square, there were perhaps 25 pics in all, about the same size
(a litte bigger or
smaller). I thought how cool it looked and kept staring at it, then I wondered "wouldn't it be cool if they all had little pop-ups" like
I've seen on some other pictures on the net. Then it hit me, what if an entire page was covered with small pictures, but all with pop-ups. The idea
just took off from there. To be honest I didn't know if the idea itself was technically feasible but I knew that I would only find
out if I went ahead and did it.
Ideas are funny, if you force them they may not come but sometimes you see a few things, connect the dots in your head and poof, an idea is
born. That's they way I look at it anyways.
3) What about the contest?
I thought that I could make the site even more fun by incorporating a contest into the design through a fun code/puzzle
embedded through the images, the site in general and even sites linked off of this one.
I know that I've always enjoyed puzzles and the like and it seems that most other
people do as well (how many of us enjoy crosswords and sudoku for example). It's simple, once you crack the code, puzzle whatever you want to call
it, email me the answer along with how you got it. The first one to do so wins.
To help I've given a few clues on the Code/Contest page.
As time goes on there may additional clues that are given in various forms, on the pictures, on the sites they link to or otherwise. To give
away too much at this point would be to give away the entire contest.
Remember that it's one thing to just give away money to a random person, another thing entirely when every person playing has a chance of
winning based on their effort and not pure chance. I think this code will be a lot of fun for the people who play and a substantial payday for the one who solves it.
Good luck!
4) What about the prize?
Ah yes the money, the prize of $50,000 is based on the possible total sales of the
squares of the site - specifically 10%. Since there are approximately 5,000 pics on this site @ $100 each that means a possible total sales
of $500,000, 10% of which would be $50,000.
The prize will be awarded to the first person to successfully crack the code and that person must also prove that they cracked it
by being able to show how they did it - this is to ensure that there is no possibility of a fluke guess. While only one person may claim the
prize, it is absolutely allowable to work with partner(s) to crack the code.
5) So how much do you stand to make?
This was answered in the above question - "what about the prize"?
6) Where did you get all these pics?
These were gathered from public domain sites, and sites that specifically allowed the use of their pictures for commercial purposes.
7) Did you create this page yourself?
Yes I did, from the initial concept to the gathering of pictures, to the miniaturization and cropping of the pictures to the design, coding and implementation of the site. You know one thing that I learned (besides css: cascading style sheets), was that doing almost anything 5,000 times over and over is a lot of work!
8) And you are?
My name is Jon Mushey, I work in the IT industry and I live in Winnipeg, that's located in the province of Manitoba in the heart of Canada.
I don't have a sick mother, I’m not trying to save the whales,
or have a secret money making idea that I'm trying to hock, or any other motive, what you see on this site is what you get. Any money
that is generated from this site will first go to paying off some old debt (like student loans that just won't
go away) and some credit card balances that could use some trimming (like many of us have). If I get to that point I'm a smilin' Charlie, anything
else is gravy.
I'm just a normal guy who had an idea and decided to go through with it. We've all had them. Some
great, some not so great, some we've tried and others we put on the back burner. I was on the fence several times
about even starting this site because I did not know if was going to work, it was one of those ideas that you can research
to death but you will only truly know if you try it.
Besides creating websites I like to go camping, rockclimbing (and this is difficult given the geographic location of
Winnipeg), mountain biking (again difficult here), listening to music (pretty much anything), working out (I like to keep in shape), movies (I like
of sci fi, action, independant and drama), reading (huge Ludlum, King and Clancy fan), playing airsoft (guys dressing up
and shooting each other with plastic bb's), playing video games (racing games are my speciality),
discussing current events, learning about history
and philosophy.
9) Why is there a border of numbers around the edge?
All the better to reference a square when you decide to purchase the space. Instead of saying "somewhere in the far right", you can give exact coordinates.
10) Why are the pics black and white?
That is how they start off initially, kind of like an unfinished mosaic, when it is hopefully complete (all space for pics is bought), the pictures that are shown will be in full color.
11) How long will the site be up?
Indefinitely, by which I mean as long as are enough sales to pay for the site hosting, the site will stay up. So, I'm hoping that this will translate into forever! I've also paid for several years of hosting up front so this site will be around for a good long while.
12) What if my question isn't answered in this faq?
If you have a burning question that you want answered or want to make a comment (hopefully a polite one) then go to my contact page and select the appropriate email to get in touch with me.
13) Do you really think that this will work?
My Grand Mother used to have a saying "the only bad idea is the one not tried". I'm sure that someone else has said it to but that is my frame of reference. I think that the only thing worse than having an idea is to have one and not even try. You gotta try things, take risks in order to see your ideas will work. The only way you'll really know if something can work, is to try it, all the analysis in the world does not replace actually going for it. But, I digress, yes, I really do think that it will work!
14) Why doesn't anything happen when I click on a black and white picture?
That square or space has not been purchased yet, when it is a link will be attached to the pics.
15) Will the images change?
If someone purchase the space that a square occupies they have the option to have a different pic placed
on the page of their choice so, yes, the pics may change.
16) Can purple monkeys really fly?
That question is really out of context for this site and out of the scope of this faq but...yes,they can ;).
