Blog

Here I will post on a regular basis updates about the site and the progress on OnePageOneWorld. Check back here often as it is my goal to keep this blog current as much as possible. Some questions that people send me may also be answered here as well if they aren't answered in the faq.

Site is Launched!

Today OnePageOneWorld went live for all the world to see. I hope the site is popular and I hope that people have fun with it.

It's been a lot of work getting my site to this stage. Like most projects, it always takes a lot longer than you think to complete. Things that you think will have days take hours and things that you think will take hours take days - lol. Check back here often for updates, if you have any questions or comments then jump here to my contacts page.

Site is RE-Launched, complete rebuild done

Okay the REAL launch is today, for several days I had problems with the site. I originaly created my site and tested it on my home pc and it looked great but as soon as I deposited it on the server - whoa. SUPER slow, it took several minutes for the site to load the main page - not cool.

I finally figured out the reason, it was due to the fact that every sinlge picture on the main page was being loaded individually and even through the files were tiny in size it was causing a backlog of files trying to get through the pipe to the browser. I fixed the problem by making image maps for every row so site loads like it should.

Bottom line is I squeezed about a month worths of work into a few days...yes, I'm tired. I had to develop a way to do it (curse css here - j/k) and then do it, 5000 times. And after this sleepless weekend it's done!! Now, I will finally submit my site to some search engines, you'll be seeing my site here and then soon.

First Nibbles

I submitted my site to every search engine known on the planet and...I've had my first emails from people interested in the site!

By and large everyone thought the idea was cool, unique and an interesting concept they haven't seen before. And a few of them were asking details about purchases so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I think that it will just take one to make the plunge and then the others will follow. More updates to come...

Made my first Sales!! Yes SALES!

In short order two companies paid for space on my site! My first $200! They said that they thought this site was going to do well and wanted in on the ground floor. One rep said that I should somehow link my site to the 2010 Olympics...hmmm...good idea but I'm pretty sure that if I did I would have to take it down shortly. Check out the first colored links on the main page!

I'm blown away, I was starting to think that all I would get were support emails and interested but "we'll think about it" emails. This is a vindication, for the work I've put it. Don't get me wrong I'm just glad that the site is up and people like it but, I wan't to see the whole site in full color as much and more than anyone.

I've also had some questions about the contest, I'll say it again - you must check the ENTIRE site to find all the clues! If you think you have an answer and want to see if you're warm or cold, remember I can't answer those questions, it would be unfair to the other players.

Another Square down...just a few thousand left

I'm happy to report that I have had another sale, my apologies for not updating the blog right away but, I do work full time. Traffic seems to be growing slowly but steadily, people are obviously talking about my site which puts a downright smile on my face.

A few have asked specifically how long the site took to create and the answer is about 3 and a half months give or take. That was working pretty much everyday on it for at least a couple of hours and often much much more. You have to remember that I work in the IT field (another answer to questions, I am a reporting analyst) so I work at a computer all day so it is even tougher to stare at another computer all night and then go to work and repeat the process.

But I think that the results speak for themselves, this site is not meant to make people wonder "how did he do it", the code is there for all to see so if you're interested take a look but it is nice when I get a pat on the back. As a side note I will update this blog probably every day or two if there is something of note that has happened. If in doubt, email me.

3 More Today!

It's the record so far (mind you it's still a short list) of 3 squares sold, converted, colored and linked! I'm happy as a clam and looking very much forward to what is to come. Slowly but surely the board is filling and I think that one page one world will look so much better in color!

It's been a long couple of weeks so I'm going to be brief but still keep your comments coming. I've had some more guesses on the code and while they were good guesses no dice so keep trying. Remember that all the info needed to solve it is on the site and that as time goes on I'm going to give additional clues that will mostly likely involve the sites that are linked off of one page one world.

My First Two Up!

The first purchase of two squares happened today - very exciting. It makes a huge differene for your ads everybody so, I'm not just whistling dixie when I say that more squares are better, just have a look for yourself, I would (and have) clicked on the beach ad, and to boot I think that getting paid to write articles for $ is a damn good idea, but enough soapboxing.

Along with my two up, I sold 3 more squares so that make a total of 10 so far! not bad for a site that's officially been up for less than 2 weeks! Please keep your questions and comments coming, I love getting them and yes I will respond to you personally (no pre made form letter for my site fans).

Slow Day at the Office

Well, I don't know if everyone was waiting for the weekend but on Friday I didn't get a single square sold (ergo not blog entry) - oh well but, on Saturday got 4!! And one of them was a Three up (I call multiple square sales 'ups', just my nickname for it), which is 3 squares featuring one pic. I've had several emails asking how the ups are doing and while even the one ups get a lot of traffic, the 2 up that I have is getting even more. So, what I postulated is true, a bigger big in color with a big pop-up grabs the attention of the eye. I think they look really good, tell me what you think.

Someone also asked me if they think other sites will be copying the concept of tiny pic ads with pop-ups and links and I think the answer is yes. It's something unique and the net is all about being unique. Do I think that someone will copy my site? Probably but, there is a barrier to entry. You can copy the code (I would prefer no one did but, there is really no way to stop it) but, trust me, it's not easy putting together thousands of pics together. The sheer volume of work will make others think "man, do I really want to invest hundreds of hours?". This is no get rich quick scheme, there is a lot of work involved.

If I saw tiny pics with pop-ups and links I would be flattered. And, since I'm not just the inventor of the concept but also a fan, you can be sure that I would be the first one to click on them and see where they take me.

Sunday is here and with it retrospection

Well today I decided not to do anything with One Page One World until I first relaxed a little. It wasn't until I had enjoyed an early fall day (fall certainly seems like it's here early this year in Winnipeg) that I checked my emails for my site. How is this different you say? Well, I usually check first thing in the morning and at several intervals during the day. I'm addicted to seeing how many emails get, what kind they are and what they have to say.

It is now up there with Starbucks, one of the little things that I take great pleasure in, reading and responding to what people have to say. I really love hearing that people like one page one world, it is a vindication of the work that I've done and the idea that I had. At first when I came up with the idea I couldn't be sure that anyone would like it but, you know when I realized that they would? It wasn't when I got my first email or even first sale, it was when I saw the final product together on one page. To me it was downright breath taking, something unique and that something was now alive.

In other news three squares were snapped up today in good order. Slow and steady wins the race, I wonder what the future holds?

First 4 up today!

By now you should be used to my terminology, so a 4 up was sold today! Yes, than means 4 squares in a mighty block that is impossible to miss. I think that you'll agree it stands out well and the pop-up of the baby is awesome. 3 more were also sold today so the site is doing really well I think. I wish that I had something more witty to say but I'm gonna be brief cause I just came from work and it does take time to add these squares to the site since I do it all manually in html and css. I knew when designing this site that the benefit of using scripting language was that it would be faster and easier but now that I've done it I'm startig to wonder...

More comments to come and answers to your questions, keep the emails coming!

Slow and Steady

Yesterday I saw that I had orders for two new square and since I said on this site that it would take 24-48 hours to get new squares up I thought that I would take a break, go for a few drinks and enjoy the later summer that wer're having. Here in Winnipeg we had a terrible summer, lot of rain with low temps so, I thought that I would enjoy things while the getting was good. I see that today I have another 2 orders so that makes 4 to put up, which I will do shortly.

A few of you have been diligent with the code and have gotten quite a number of the clues - I am seriously impressed! I created the damn thing and think that it would take me longer to get where some of you already are. Keep it up!

More Every Day

I had to take a break yesterday, ever sleep on your neck funny and then the next day you couldn't even turn it? That was me yesteray and still today to some extent. So, even though I got four orders they had to wait until I was in a position to be able to put myself in the position of sitting at my computer for a couple of hours. How did I manage to function at work you say? With EXTREME difficulty, at one point I was thinking of packing it in and heading home but, I soldiered on - I'm no wimp! :)

Friday once again held its weekend lead as the slowest day for sales, only 1 today but, it was a 2 up so all in all I can't complain. After I get this latest batch up I'm gonna take a break and go out for a few. Talk to you guys tomorrow or at latest the day after that.

Refresh your Browsers!

Just a heads up to everyone to please refresh your browsers when you come back one page one world, for some reason the page that gets displayed without refreshing may be an old version that will not show updated squares. I found this out myself after making some changes and checking them online, the latest squars didn't pop-up until I refreshed it. I could go into a technical rant as to why I think that this happens but I won't.

First off, general news, 5 more square up today which is a very healthy total, and one of them is a two up. I'm glad I'm getting more multiples but I can't wait until someone decides to buy a really big block like 9 or more - that will look f****** awesome and the pop-up that goes with it will be HUGE!

Incidentally for those of you who notice that the timestamp on this blog entry is the same date as the next, I simply didn't have time to upload this entry yesterday so, I just left it for today.

Long Weekend

I must say that I'm happy with the overall activity with the site given that this is a long weekend here in North America, I just assumed that people would be out more doing weekend type things but, I guess the recession is preventing some of that making surfing an attractive and cheap option for many (I am no exception). Since I am in the IT field I like to use the anaology of Neo in the first movie when I picture a prgrammer hard at work at home. Remember in the first movie when he's at his desk surrounded by computers and notes? Well, that's me to some extent and I think to some extent many IT people except, I'm not searching for the answer to a question "What is the Matrix", and I'm not a hacker.

I am however searching for purpose and meaning, this is not just a blog joke, I still have not found what I consider to be my purpose. I think that I'll know when it happens - at least that's what I tell myself.

But enough of waxing poetic, I'm sure most of you just glossed over the personal stuff (if not email me), 4 more went up today and I'm looking forward to see if this current trend holds or hopefully goes north of 10 a day. That's when I'll really start to sit back and say "Man, this is really taking off"!

Anyone got a case of the Mondays?

Well I don't - have a case of the Mondays that is (please feel free to give me a couple shots in the shoulder for mentioning "case of the Mondays"). It's a long weekend and I enjoyed a little mountain biking today and now feel a little more refreshed to update the site and answer emails. I thought that today would have been dead slow cause of the holiday but I did get three today and it's still fairly early. I guess most people did their weekend stuff on Sat or Sun and are just chilling today which suits me just fine.

I'm off to answer your emails (I actually really do enjoy doing this) so, get in touch with me about anything, keep spreading the word about the site and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Submitted on Sept.7, 2009 @ 2:03 pm CST

Well what can I say?

Well, I've been getting a lot of mail about the contes and more and more entries but so far no dice. Some really inspired guesses though nothing on the mark yet. Still, keep trying, don't give up and eventually you will get it. Like anything in life anything worth going after requires effort and yes a four letter word - work.

But as I told a couple guys don't look at it like some assignment or some project, it's meant to be fun. So, take a break once in a while take a break, leave it for a couple days, come back, try again. In other news over the course of the last couple of days 5 more squares went - not to shabby.

Submitted on Sept.9, 2009 @ 5:01 pm CST

Keep... Moving...Forward

I'm glad that this site is doing so well, I'm glad that alot of people are enjoying it and of course I enjoy the pats on the back. Some have asked if I think all the squares will be sold...I hope so, and if so then what? Well, I actually have numerous ideas in my head, some that would require a fair bit of start up capital and some only a few hundred. Now of course alot of you are going to ask me what those ideas are but you know that I can't tell you - maybe - how's this for a deal, if this site sells out (and stranger things have happened) then I will let a couple of my ideas slip. One Page One World won't be a one hit wonder, I promise you that, it will just be the start of many cool and interesting projects, some on the internet and some not.

We had beautiful weather here in this awesome city of Winnipeg today, I think we're having a late summer and I'm grateful. If other parts of the world were having weather as nice as ours then it explains why 4 squares sold today and one was a two up! I actually read somewhere that people are more likely to make purchases when it's nice out so, hope this weather holds for a long time.

Things that I have seen

What can I say today, this Sunday, day of rest. Gorgeous weather outside so, I think that I'll do a little mountain biking however I use the term mountain only in passing reference since we don't really have anything approaching mountains here. So, I guess the proper term to use would be I'm going to do a little off road biking? As much fun as sitting at this computer all day is I still have to get out once in a while.

Last Friday was a bust, nothing sold! Friday seems to be maintaining its curse but as usual Saturday brought forth retribution and I made three sales and so far one today which I will be adding today.

I've received emails from around the world about my site as far as numerous countries in Europe, South America and as far east as Bangladesh. It's a treat to hear about what your lives are like and how they differ from mine here. Makes me want to do some travelling soon. I've been to Europe on a few occassions before but I think that this time I will point my compass south or east - any recommendations?
